Tool Might Do Las Vegas Residency, Says Drummer Danny Carey
For the sake of stoners, trippers, and overall weirdos, this NEEDS to happen. Danny Carey, the drummer of Tool, revealed in a new interview with Spiral Out that not only are they already working on a follow-up to their 2019 album Fear Inoculum (which will hopefully come out in 2027), but they might also be working on something just as big—a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere. Watch the interview clip below.
Yes, you read that right. Usually, at least to me, residencies are reserved for arena pop stars like Madonna or Britney, or classic rockers like The Eagles or something I guess (but then there’s also Metallica, who are apparently 90% of the way done with negotiating their residency, set to take place in 2027 as well). But, as Carey outlined in the interview, Tool could potentially be added to that list.
It was pointed out in the interview how Tool is “a very cinematic band” when it comes to their live shows, to which Carey obviously had no choice but to agree, since it’s very true. “Yeah, we’re very much into that. We’re hoping when we release the new record, maybe do a stint at the Sphere [in Las Vegas] ’cause I think we’re the perfect band for that. We’ve been talking to those guys.”
A lot goes into something like that when it comes to the preparation, cost and logistics, and Carey acknowledged how getting a show to opening there “is pretty intense.” He added: “It’s a very expensive endeavor, and it takes a while to get into the black. I think [you have to play] a few shows before you make any money.”
Honestly, a Tool residency would be so epic. With a capacity as big as the Sphere’s, so many collective mind loads could be blown at the same time it’d be iconic.
